Last week we were informed of the death of our President Bob Heywood after a long illness.
Bob was largely responsible for the rise of Junior rowing in Chester-le-Street between the late 80’s and the early part of this century, coaching and mentoring many young people in a sport that was very much in the minority at the time. He was instrumental in the rebuilding of the rowing club we have today.
He was a wonderful man, full of integrity and character, with a keen eye for talent and a passion for helping young people. He will be greatly missed but fondly remembered.
The club ethos that he instilled in its members was “You don’t row at the club, you row for the club”.
Our deepest sympathies go out to his family and friends at this sad time.
Bob’s family have asked us to inform the rowing community of the funeral arrangements.
Bob’s funeral will take place on Friday 1st September 2023 at 11.00am, at St Cuthbert’s R.C Church Ropery Lane. A cremation is taking place at Birtley Crematorium and afterwards a celebration of his life at Chester le Street Town Cricket Club.
On the way from his family home in Lumley to the church Bob’s family have asked the funeral directors to make a brief detour to the club in recognition of his involvement over the years.
